About San Diego
Renowned as “America’s Finest City”, San Diego is located in Southern California along the spectacular coast of the Pacific Ocean. Loved for its warm, year-round climate and miles of white sandy beaches, the city has lots of attractions to offer.
As California’s second largest city and 8th largest in the US, San Diego is made up of 18 towns and incorporated cities and two parts. The larger part extends north and east of San Diego’s bay area while the smaller part stretches towards the Mexican border to the north from the bay. The area is characterized by broad valleys, canyons, and mesas.
Interesting facts
The City of San Diego was discovered by Juan Cabrillo, a European explorer. He made the discovery in 1542. Before the city was named San Diego, it was called San Miguel but was renamed in 1602 to its present name.
Originally, the area belonged to Mexico and the city was located at the foot of Presidio Hill. In 1848, San Diego County became part of the US after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed. This ended the US-Mexico War.
Did you know that the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Wilson Reagan, was the first American to drive across the Coronado bridge when it was opened in 1969? As a pre-stressed concrete and steel girder bridge, it connects San Diego with Coronado by crossing over the San Diego Bay. With five lanes, the bridge daily traffic is more than 75,000.
San Diego contains the 485 hectares (1200 acre), Balboa Park. Located in downtown San Diego, it is home to the world-renowned San Diego Zoo. Also, it contains the Globe Theaters, Japanese Friendship Garden and several museums devoted to folk art, fine art, natural history, aerospace, and local history.

San Diego enjoys warm, year-round climate. Classified as a Mediterranean climate, it features sunny summers and dry winters. The average temperature range is 14.1 degrees C (57.3 degrees F) and 22 degrees C (72 degrees F). Ice and snow are rare during winter and may occur inland. Between May and August, marine layer clouds form over San Diego causing temperatures to lower. Many people refer to the thin layer of clouds as “May Gray or “June Gloom.”
On average, San Diego experiences 144 sunny days with 117 cloudy days every year.

The City of San Diego has a population of 1.42 million (2017) distributed across 372.1 square miles of land. This marks an increase of 8.6% from the previous census of 2010. For the urban area, the population is 2.96 million. This makes it the third largest urban area in California after Los Angeles and San Francisco.
